People planning a move search for "moving inventory checklist". The results I found were spreadsheet templates to download and fill in, and box apps that track a few boxes for free and then ask you to pay. AllKeep Inventory now has a free page for it, in six languages, with no account: inventory.allkeep.org/en/moving-inventory.
Number each box as you pack
A new box gets the next number and the room of the box before it, because most people pack one room at a time. You write the room in the new home and what goes inside, and tick "fragile" or "open first". Removing a box doesn't renumber the others, so the labels already on your boxes still match. "Which box is it in?" searches every box at once.

Print the checklist and the labels
The checklist has every box with its room and what's inside, and two empty columns to tick when the box is loaded and when it arrives.

The labels come from the free label maker, two per box by default: one for the top, one for a side. A phone camera reads the QR code and opens the box's list in the browser.

At the new home
Tick each box as it comes in. The page counts the boxes that have arrived and lists the numbers that haven't, so you notice a missing box before the truck leaves.

After the move
Download the Excel file and open it in the web app's import. Each box comes in as a box in its room, with its things. Your list stays in your browser, and what you type is not sent to us.
