A rota works only if people remember their turn, and in most groups one person ends up reminding everyone else. In a thread on r/roommates someone asked how to split chores "without one roommate becoming the reminder person". Turns now hands that job to each person's own phone.
Your turns in your calendar
A shared rota has a new box, "In your calendar". Pick your name, then "iPhone or Mac" or "Google Calendar". Your calendar asks whether to subscribe, and your turns appear as all-day events, each with a reminder at 6 pm the day before. For Outlook or any other calendar, copy the address and add it as a calendar from the internet. "Everyone's" gives one calendar with the whole group's turns and names.

It follows the board
It is a subscription: your calendar reads the rota again on its own. When someone can't do a turn and it goes to the next person, when two people swap, or when someone is away, the event leaves one calendar and lands in another the next time each calendar checks. Calendars check every few hours; Google's can take up to a day. A turn that was not done leaves your calendar and comes back as your next turn, the same as on the board.
Some calendars drop the reminders of a subscribed calendar. If yours does, set an alert for that calendar once.
Nobody gives an e-mail address or installs anything. The calendar's address contains the rota's link, and it shows only what the board already shows to anyone who has that link.
