Japan Life Hub's salary calculator gave you a number and no way to check it. Now its pages show how they get there.
Before writing the steps I ran three salaries through kei3, the take-home simulator r/JapanFinance recommends, for a single employee in Tokyo. From the second year our take-home differs by ¥635 a year at ¥3 million, ¥781 at ¥5 million and ¥1,353 at ¥8 million. kei3 counts the calendar year 2026, with January and February at Tokyo's old health insurance rate of 9.91% and January to March at the old employment insurance rate; the Hub uses the rates in force now for all twelve months.
The answer first
The calculator page now opens with one sentence: on ¥5,000,000 a year, a single employee in Tokyo under 40 keeps ¥348,764 a month in the first year and ¥328,514 from the second. A link takes you down to the steps.

Eight steps, each with its numbers
Under the calculator, that salary is worked out the way a payslip does it: the insurance grade your pay falls in, health insurance, pension, employment insurance, the employment income deduction, income tax, and resident tax from the second year, split between the ward and Tokyo. Each line shows the multiplication, so you can redo it on a phone. Every rate links to the page it comes from: Kyokai Kenpo, the Japan Pension Service, Hello Work, three National Tax Agency answers and Chuo City. On the calculator page this is in Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Chinese, Indonesian and Vietnamese for now.

On every salary page
The same steps, with that page's salary, are on all 177 take-home pages in all seven languages, English included: every ¥100,000 from ¥2 to ¥15 million a year, and monthly pay from ¥150,000 to ¥600,000. In English, start from ¥5,000,000 a year.
